1975 Topps Denny Doyle
As the years pass by, it gets harder and hard to say goodbye. Every time we lose a player from my youth, it gets harder and harder to deal with.
We lost another today. Denny Doyle, a second baseman who played for the Phillies (my local team) before I was old enough to know what was going on, passed away. I best remember Doyle from the 1975 Topps baseball card as that was the year I truly started collecting cards.
He was a good little ballplayer who hit a little and fielded a little, but was nothing special. That is unless you are a 6 year old and you love his baseball card. Then it's different. I don't know if it was the mountains in the background, the pose on the card or just his name. I really don't know. But what I do know is, he represented 1970s baseball to me. A time when I was quite young and baseball may have been at its apex.
Sportscard Memories has become more of a memorial to players from my youth more than anything else. It wasn't the original intention, but I think it's a nice way to honor players that have passed on but will be remembered by me, and hopefully by you, for a very long time. Rest in Peace, Denny Doyle.
